With a cargo apron, Hyderabad airport can now be a pharma hub

Hyderabad Dec 5:
The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad has commissioned a dedicated cargo apron, which is expected to boost its air cargo traffic and develop the airport as a major pharma hub.
This is capable of handling wide bodied Code F category aircraft, such as Boeing747-8F, B747-400F and Airbus A380.
This will now facilitate end-to-end cold chain transportation of pharmaceutical products from the shippers’ premises to the consignee’s premises.
The airport, after analysing the missing links in the cold chain route, had identified at least four major points that were vulnerable to temperature spikes.
These included loading/unloading at the truck dock of the cargo terminal, transportation from shippers locations to airport’s cargo terminal and movement to and from the aircraft at the ramp.
It was subsequently decided to build the dedicated cargo apron adjacent to the pharma zone of the cargo terminal.

“With this new facility, goods processed in the pharma zone will be temperature controlled and the cold chain integrity will continue while shifting the cargo from terminal to the aircraft,” airport authorities say.
Vikram Jaisinghani, Chief Executive Officer of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, said, “This cargo apron up-gradation will help the airport to cater to heavy international freighters, which require increased pavement strength.”
Carsten Hernig, Regional Director (South Asia & Middle East), Lufthansa Cargo, said this would boost the joint efforts of the airport and Lufthansa Cargo in developing Hyderabad as a pharma hub.
