CISF to get dog and bomb detection squads at airport

Security mechanism at Tiruchi Airport is poised to be strengthened further with a sniffer dog squad and a dedicated Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) having been approved for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) which is in charge of airport security.
Construction of a kennel to accommodate the sniffer dogs is already underway close to the airport, which was brought under closed circuit television system last December.
The sniffer dog squad would consist of six canines highly-trained in detection of explosive substances. Security-related equipment for the proposed BDDS would be procured centrally by the airport authorities across the country, airport sources said.
The establishment of a sniffer dog squad and a dedicated BDDS would scale up security at the airport where round-the-clock vigil is being maintained by the CISF personnel. Officials say the BDDS would be stationed at the airport to respond swiftly in times of emergency situation. Barring the outer area where security is taken care of by the State police, the CISF provides comprehensive security covering all areas of the airport including terminal building and perimeter security utilising its strength of over 200 personnel in shifts.
Tiruchi airport, which was declared an international airport through a notification issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation recently, has been classified under the “sensitive” category.
The airport, which has witnessed a steady increase in air travellers over the years, has over 110 international flights arriving and leaving Tiruchi every week to overseas destinations such as Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai and Singapore.
In a related development, officials said the immigration wing at the airport would soon be brought under the control of the Intelligence Bureau. Presently, immigration personnel are from the State police and under the control of the security branch CID.
