Airports Authority of India eyes 18.92 acres for phase II of airport development plan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has identified 18.92 acres for immediate acquisition for the second phase of development of the Trivandrum International Airport. It has also sent the area details, as per the settlement registrar's stipulation, to district collector K N Satheesh.
However, the collector, who was recently nominated as the managing director of the Trivandrum International Airport Development Society (Triads), is unlikely to take any action until the government involves the transport department in the acquisition process. The transport department handles issues related with airport development in the state.
"I wrote to the transport department last week pointing out the anomaly. Holding charge as Triads MD, I will have to play the dual role of sending the requisition for acquiring land and also approving it. This could create legal complications. So, I have asked the government to involve the transport department in the requisition process. The department can send the MD a requisition letter rather than it coming from a single source," said Satheesh.
The government had decided to release around 20 acres for airport development following a series of meetings initiated by the AAI. The chief minister himself had attended one of these meetings in December which was followed by a follow up meeting with the chief secretary.
The government had agreed in principle to allot 120 acres for the construction of an integrated terminal building and associated facilities of the Trivandrum International Airport, however, only 38 acres was handed over for the construction of the new international terminal building (NITB). The subsequent increase in land value has prompted the government to acquire the remaining 82 acres in a phased manner.
Coconut farms occupy 1.50 acres of the 18.92 acres. Around 29 families reside in the remaining 17-odd acres, for whom a rehabilitation package must be drawn up. The government is discussing a figure of Rs 200 crore for the second phase of land acquisition. "We are hoping to fix the land value and rehabilitation package and get it to reflect in the annual budget," said a government official.
