Washington, Nov. 28:
US President Barack Obama signed a law on Tuesday that shields US
airlines from having to comply with a greenhouse gas standard adopted by the
European Union. The law was recently passed both in the House and the Senate,
with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle saying the EU lacked the power to
create standards for US operators.
The EU’s programme requires airlines using European airports to obtain
allowances for carbon dioxide emitted during the their flight. Airlines that go
over designated limits will be allowed to buy additional allowances on the open
market.
Earlier this month, the EU said it would postpone the greenhouse gas
programme for a year. It said it was encouraged by progress being made in a UN
agency tasked with developing global aviation policy.
